Michigan State Rep Karen Whitsett Leaves Office Citing Faith Conflict With Democratic Party

Michigan State Representative Karen Whitsett announced she will not seek re-election and is stepping away from politics entirely, saying the Democratic Party's radical positions on abortion and LGBTQ issues have become incompatible with her Christian faith.

Whitsett, who represents Michigan's 4th House District covering parts of north and northwest Detroit, made the announcement in March. She described the decision as a "spiritual decision" rooted in her commitment to Jesus Christ and the authority of Scripture.

"I just sincerely kept asking, please do not back me into a corner. Please do not keep pushing LGBTQ agenda. Please do not keep pushing the abortion agenda," Whitsett said in a recent interview on Fox News' The Ingraham Angle.

She explained that she repeatedly warned Democratic Party leadership not to force her hand on these issues. Over the past four years, Whitsett found herself increasingly at odds with party leaders for pushing policies she felt were incompatible with her beliefs.

"For me, it is impossible to be a faithful follower of Jesus Christ while remaining a member of the Democratic Party as it exists today," Whitsett said. "That conviction includes the issues I cannot reconcile with Scripture: abortion, the normalization of the gay lifestyle, and the push to redefine gender."

Whitsett made clear that her faith left her no choice. "I'm not a co-signer of crazy," the lawmaker declared when it comes to the direction of her party.

The state representative has clashed with Democratic leadership for years over abortion expansion and certain LGBTQ policies, especially those relating to children. She described the conflicts as intensifying over the last three to three-and-a-half years.

"I don't understand how 'Christian' and 'Bible' go together with Democratic Party," Whitsett added in her interview. "What I've seen over these last four years is not consistent with the teachings of Jesus Christ."
