Michigan State Police Launch First International Distracted Driving Enforcement Initiative Along I-94 Corridor

LANSING — Michigan State Police are conducting a groundbreaking traffic safety initiative that marks the first joint international distracted driving enforcement operation in North America.

The effort, titled "Lake to Lake: Focused and Safe," begins April 1 and runs from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. each day. MSP is partnering with the Indiana State Police, Ontario Provincial Police, and local law enforcement agencies across Michigan to carry out the initiative.

A First for North American Law Enforcement

"This effort represents the first joint international distracted driving enforcement operation in North America," stated Col. James F. Grady II, director of the Michigan State Police.

The initiative spans more than 500 miles of heavily traveled routes, starting in Indiana, continuing across Michigan to Port Huron, and extending into Canada along Highway 401 from the Ambassador Bridge to Toronto.

Focus on West Michigan Communities

The enforcement will include high-visibility saturation patrols along the I-94 corridor. Participating agencies include over 50 MSP troopers and motor carrier officers from the First, Second, Third and Fifth districts.

For West Michigan residents, the I-94 corridor represents a major transportation artery. The state's largest cities, including Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, and Battle Creek, all lie along or near this route. The initiative aims to deliver a consistent safety message to drivers throughout the entire corridor.

Goal: Reduce Traffic Crashes

The campaign focuses on heavily traveled routes and aims to reduce traffic crashes. Participating agencies will enforce distracted driving laws with increased visibility along the entire corridor.

"This initiative treats this heavily traveled route as a single, continuous enforcement corridor where police agencies will be increasing enforcement against distracted driving," the Michigan State Police explained.
